Section Information for Fall 2016
This is a graduate level seminar in survey research design. The course begins with a review of the history and development of survey research methods and a discussion of the purposes and goals of survey research. The primary emphasis, however, will be on the design and administration of survey instruments. Main topics include survey content and questionnaire construction, implementation, sampling and the sociology of the survey process. Students will be encouraged to think of survey research not simply as a data collection technique, but also as a form of social interaction. Emphasis will also be given to the link between survey instruments and data management and analysis issues that influence the usability of the data once it has been collected. Readings for the course cover the principles of good survey design and implementation. The lab component of the course focuses on the management and manipulation of survey data using SPSS, as well as the creation and deployment of web surveys using Qualtrics, a powerful survey tool available to Mason faculty and students.
