Dana Brown: The Next System of Healthcare

Tuesday, March 21, 2023 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM EDT
Van Metre Hall (formerly Founders Hall), #118

Dana Brown is a 2023 Next System Speakers series guest:

Our vision is of a political economy fundamentally transformed into a next system centered in the values of sustainability, equity, democracy, and broadly shared health and wellbeing. Representing nearly 20% of the US economy (and growing!), the healthcare sector has incredible potential to function as a pillar of a new, democratic economy that produces these improved outcomes by design. However, as currently organized, the healthcare sector is illustrative of broader detrimental trends in the economy like increasing investment in extractive practices at the expense of investments in productive and equitable practices. Despite spending more on healthcare than any other country in the world, U.S. health outcomes are lackluster, and many health inequities are growing. This talk will explore both the current landscape of the U.S. healthcare sector and proposals for a democratized healthcare system that produces better and more equitable outcomes for both population health and the economy.
