The Global South Research Hub, housed within the Center for Social Science Research (CSSR) at George Mason University, is organizing its third annual Global South Graduate Student Conference to be held on Thursday, May 2nd and Friday, 3rd, 2024 via Zoom.
The conference series theme this year is Decolonizing Methodologies.
The disciplines of sociology and anthropology have historically been knotted with projects of power and dominance. Originally introduced as a response to human suffering, sociology has established itself as a distinguished field of knowledge. However, its tendency to generalize and prioritize Western concepts has resulted in its elevation above all other experiences and ways of understanding. Anthropology has considered human (and non-human) entities that we share the world with as objects rather than collaborators in the construction of knowledge. The construction of the "other," which has been fundamentally constitutive of modernity and colonialism, has shaped the emergence and development of sociology and anthropology. Given this, how can we conduct research sensitive to and critical of the above formation of knowledge? What are the possibilities for creating socially equitable and transformative futures? Finally, how can we imagine a fairer world and cultivate communities that celebrate joy?
We invite papers that draw inspiration from the humane ways of knowing upheld by Indigenous and Black Studies, Antiracist, Decolonial, Postcolonial, and Feminist scholarship. We recognize that the social injustices addressed through our research and teaching are interconnected, and therefore, we must break down the barriers between disciplines by engaging in interdisciplinary work. The papers could look at any part of the world through the lens of decolonization, through its methodologies, knowledge, paradigms, histories, sociologies, and anthropologies. While we value comparisons and transnational connections, all papers from all parts of the world are welcome.
We are inviting submissions of abstracts by the deadline of 11:59pm on March 10, 2024 from current graduate students at any stage of their study, across disciplines within the humanities and social sciences field. from any university in the world. Participants will be notified about acceptance decision by March 15, 2024.
