GSSA/PSA Public Sociology Panel Discussion

The Promise and Problems of Engaging Publics

Past Event

Friday, November 12, 2010 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM EST
Johnson Center, 3rd Floor, Room A

The Graduate Student Sociology Association and the Public Sociology Association are organizing and co-sponsoring a panel discussion during the afternoon of Friday, November 12 to discuss leading academics' perspectives and contrasting visions of the field and future of public sociology. (Admission is free).

There are mounting debates within the discipline concerning public sociology's place, relevance, and future within the larger field of sociology. The panel discussants are from three different universities, and each hold passionate views about public sociology, and are devoted to expressing these views publicly. Attendees will be exposed to vastly disparate notions of public sociology, and will witness a potentially passionate debate involving these scholar/activists who are very committed to their stance. We see potential for a debate-like atmosphere, as a couple of these discussants hold very different notions of what public sociology should be/do.

Speakers:

Dr. Leslie Hossfeld of UNC Wilmington (Public Sociologist)

Dr. Phil Nyden of Loyola, Chicago (Public Sociologist)

Dr. Matthew Deflem of the University of South Carolina

Moderator:

John Dale of GMU
