In this webinar, Jennifer Ashley examines the ongoing political relevance of a digital archive she created to document Chile’s 1988 vote to return to democracy. In so doing, she explores multiple ways in which activism intersects with the creation and use of a digital archive. She notes, "As archivists/record-keepers, we make decisions about what is kept and what is not, how to display the preserved material, and what context to provide to the public to interpret that material. Digital archives, like Chile 88, also often include the creation and incorporation of new materials, such as oral histories, which may serve to diversify the digital domain, and complicate widely accepted representations of historical events." Finally, she will discuss how she shares material from this archive through social media platforms and how the conversation around that material has evolved over time in response to the political debates of the moment.
